purser
   The professional title of the chief steward on a passenger liner, in general charge of the passengers’ welfare. He also keeps the accounts and at one time, in the navy, was paymaster, hence the connection with ‘purse’. Examples of the vocative occur in, e.g., Shipmaster, by Gwyn Griffin.
